Diversity Lottery Visa Program 2009 – Due to increase in legal immigration to the US, Brazil is not participating.
Every year the United States Department of States conducts the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, also known as Green Card Lottery, which makes available 50,000 permanent immigrant visas to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Winners are selected randomly, and there is no fee to enter the Lottery.

Every year the Department of State examines how many people have emigrated from their country to the United States. If the number of immigrants of any given nationality has exceeded 50,000 in the last five years, this country will be added to the list of countries ineligible to participate in the Lottery. This year, because of a large number of Brazilians becoming Lawful Permanent Residents of the United States, Brazil is not eligible to participate in the Lottery. In other words, Brazilian citizens will not be able to submit an entry to the Lottery in 2007.
